Chapter 1 - The Sound of the Slap

The luxurious garden terrace of the American estate was a breathtaking picture of high-society elegance. Bright sunlight poured over the blooming white and blue hydrangeas. Hundreds of wealthy elite guests, holding crystal glasses of expensive champagne, mingled for the highly exclusive charity brunch. But the elegant symphony of wealth was violently shattered by a sudden, sickening sound.

SMACK.

The heavy, explosive slap echoed across the polished stone of the terrace. But the blow didn't land where it was intended.

Vanessa, the stunningly attractive blonde fiancée of the city’s most feared billionaire, stood trembling with vicious, unhinged rage. She wore a flawlessly tailored pink designer dress and a heavy string of authentic pearls, looking every inch the future queen of the mafia empire. Her hand was suspended in the air, stinging from the immense force of the strike.

She had aimed the violent blow directly at the face of a terrified seven-year-old girl.

Instead, a young woman in a traditional purple and white maid uniform had lunged across the terrace with explosive speed, throwing her own body directly into the line of fire.

Grace, the estate’s twenty-something housekeeper, stumbled backward from the sheer impact. Her dark brown hair, tied back in a neat ponytail, whipped across her face as a bright, angry red handprint immediately began to swell across her pale cheek.

Behind Grace’s protective legs, seven-year-old Sophie screamed in terror, clutching the fabric of the housekeeper’s purple skirt. And sitting on the stone floor, completely traumatized, was three-year-old Caleb. The tiny boy in the light blue shirt sobbed uncontrollably, clutching a torn, muddy stuffed brown rabbit tightly against his chest.
