Chapter 5 - The Housekeeper's Courage

Grace gently rested her hands on Sophie’s small shoulders, anchoring the terrified seven-year-old girl. She didn't look away from Vanessa.
"I know exactly whose house this is," Grace replied, her voice ringing with icy, unshakable courage. "This house belongs to a man who loves his children more than his own life. A man who would burn the entire city to the ground before he ever let anyone lay a finger on them."
Vanessa rolled her eyes in profound irritation. "Oh, please. Evan is a businessman. He’s marrying me for power, not because he wants to play house with his dead wife's leftovers. He won't care what I do to them."
The horrific, heartless words hung in the bright, sunny air. Several of the wealthy guests actually grimaced in disgust, but none of them possessed the courage to step forward and defend the children from a mafia boss’s bride.
"Security!" Vanessa barked, snapping her fingers wildly toward the perimeter of the terrace. "Get this psychotic maid away from my future stepchildren! Drag her down to the basement until I figure out what to do with her!"
Two massive, broad-shouldered private security guards in black suits immediately detached themselves from the walls. They marched heavily across the stone terrace, their eyes locked onto Grace, fully prepared to forcefully drag her away and leave the children to Vanessa's mercy.
