Chapter 3 - The Torn Rabbit

"Excuse me?" Vanessa hissed, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. She pointed a manicured finger directly at the sobbing three-year-old boy on the floor. "That little brat brought a filthy, disgusting, mud-stained toy out to my charity brunch! I am hosting the governor in ten minutes, and he is sitting there holding literal garbage!"
Grace looked down at the stuffed brown rabbit in Caleb's tiny hands.
It wasn't garbage. It was the very last thing the children’s late mother had given them before she passed away. Caleb carried it everywhere, finding absolute comfort in the faded, worn fabric.
Just minutes prior, Vanessa had spotted the toy, marched over in her elegant pink dress, and violently snatched it from the toddler's hands. When seven-year-old Sophie bravely tried to defend her little brother, Vanessa had completely lost her temper, tearing the rabbit's ear and raising her hand to strike the brave little girl.
"It is his mother's rabbit," Grace said, her voice laced with heavy, restrained emotion. "He is three years old. He is grieving. And you are a monster."
Vanessa let out a cold, theatrical laugh that sent shivers down the spines of the watching guests. She adjusted her expensive pearl necklace, looking at Grace with pure, unadulterated contempt.
