Chapter 2 - The Housekeeper's Shield

Grace’s ears were ringing from the force of the slap, and the taste of copper filled her mouth. But the young housekeeper did not fall. She did not cry.
With a slow, deep breath, Grace straightened her posture. The terrified, submissive maid persona completely vanished, replaced by a fierce, steadfast courage. She gently pushed little Sophie slightly further behind her, creating an impenetrable human shield between the billionaire's children and the monster in the pink dress.
Grace reached a trembling hand down to stroke three-year-old Caleb’s hair, silently promising him that he was safe. Then, she raised her chin, locking her deep brown eyes directly onto Vanessa’s furious glare.
"You will not touch those children again," Grace stated.
Her voice wasn't a scream. It was a firm, unwavering vow that echoed over the rustling leaves of the hydrangeas.
The elite guests surrounding the terrace gasped in unison. In their cutthroat world, a servant speaking to the future wife of a mafia boss with such blatant defiance was an absolute death sentence. Whispers began to ripple through the crowd of politicians and socialites, all of them staring at the ruined charity brunch.
Vanessa’s jaw dropped in sheer, unadulterated shock. She looked at her manicured hand, then at the lowly housekeeper who had just dared to give her an order in front of high society.
