Chapter 2 - The Tiny Shield

Grace’s breath hitched. Her realistic facial micro-expressions shifted from profound shock to a heartbreaking, tearful vulnerability. She was just a nanny, completely powerless against a woman born into immense mafia wealth.
But as Grace lowered her head, fighting back the humiliated tears burning in her eyes, a tiny movement caught her attention.
Little Noah, the three-year-old Caucasian boy she had loved and raised like her own for the past two years, had been shrinking back against the velvet sofa in pure terror. He was dressed flawlessly in a light blue formal vest and trousers, a tiny dark bowtie fastened at his collar for the evening's gala.
He was shaking. He had never seen violence like this inside his own home.
But seeing the red mark forming on Grace’s pale cheek triggered something deep inside the little boy. The sheer terror in his wide eyes was suddenly eclipsed by a fierce, undeniable protective instinct.
Without a second of hesitation, the three-year-old boy sprinted across the polished marble floor. He planted his tiny, leather-clad shoes directly in front of Grace, spreading his small arms out wide to form a human shield between the beloved nanny and the cruel woman in the emerald gown.
