Chapter 2 - The Stolen Life

To understand why the violent exposure of a maid's shoulder was about to completely detonate a multi-billion-dollar empire, one had to look back exactly twenty years to the darkest, most horrific tragedy in the history of the Moretti family.

Two decades ago, before they had fully consolidated their massive international real estate empire, the wealthy Moretti family lived in a sprawling, multi-million-dollar penthouse apartment in downtown Chicago. One freezing winter night, a catastrophic electrical fire broke out on the lower floors, quickly engulfing the entire residential high-rise in an unstoppable, terrifying inferno.

In the chaotic, blinding smoke, the family was violently separated.

Eleanor Moretti and her young son, Vincent, barely managed to escape to the roof, where they were evacuated by emergency helicopter. But Eleanor’s beautiful nineteen-year-old daughter, Isabella, was trapped inside the burning apartment. The fire burned for three consecutive days. When the ashes finally settled, the authorities could find absolutely no trace of the young woman. She was presumed dead, her body entirely consumed by the flames.

The horrific loss completely broke the Moretti family. Eleanor never stopped grieving her little girl, keeping Isabella’s bedroom exactly as she had left it. Vincent grew up haunted by the sister he couldn't save, transforming into a cold, fiercely protective, and unyielding corporate titan who trusted absolutely no one.

They had spent twenty years mourning a ghost.

They had absolutely no idea that Isabella had not died in the fire.

She had survived, barely escaping the building before it collapsed, but she had suffered a severe, traumatic brain injury and horrific burns. Waking up in a chaotic overflow hospital weeks later with profound, complete amnesia, she had absolutely no memory of her name, her billionaire family, or her past.
