Chapter 9 - The Memories Return

Medium close-up: Claire slowly lowered her hands from the torn fabric, looking up from the shattered glass scattered across the marble floor.
Her brown eyes were wide with profound, paralyzing shock as they met Eleanor's tear-filled, desperate gaze. For her entire adult life, Claire’s mind had been a protective, impenetrable fortress, sealing away the horrific trauma of her past behind a thick wall of complete amnesia.
But the violent physical shock of falling onto the hard floor, the intense, suffocating heat generated by the hundreds of flickering candles in the ballroom, and the absolute, raw, agonizing desperation staring back at her from the older woman's eyes acted as a massive, psychological explosive.
The thick, impenetrable wall in Claire's mind violently shattered.

She heard the deafening roar of the collapsing ceiling. She felt the unbearable, white-hot searing agony of the molten metal burning directly into her shoulder.
And then, she heard the screaming. She heard a mother screaming her name into the flames.

Claire’s chest heaved violently as the horrific, buried memories flooded her completely. She looked directly into Eleanor's weeping eyes, finally recognizing the beautiful, loving face that had haunted her vague, faceless nightmares for two decades.
A subtle, incredibly powerful emotional pause hung heavily in the air as the invisible servant finally remembered exactly who she was.
