Chapter 5 - The Shattered Glass

Medium shot: The suffocating silence in the grand luxury gala ballroom was broken only by the quiet, agonized sound of Claire's ragged breathing.
Claire stumbled backward in deep, overwhelming shock, her knees pressing painfully into the cold, polished marble floor. She desperately clutched the torn, shredded fabric of her black-and-white uniform with trembling hands, trying frantically to cover her exposed right shoulder.
She was surrounded by a terrifying minefield of shattered crystal champagne glasses. A sharp shard of glass had sliced into her palm when she fell, leaving a bright red streak of blood trailing onto the pristine marble floor.
Standing right beside her, completely unaffected by the violence she had just committed, Vanessa sneered down at the kneeling maid with malicious, sociopathic triumph. She wanted the wealthy guests to see her absolute dominance.
"Please... let me go," Claire whispered, her voice shaken, completely breathless, and trembling with the sheer terror of public humiliation. She kept her eyes glued to the shattered glass, desperate to disappear into the floorboards.
"You don't leave until I dismiss you, you clumsy piece of trash!" Vanessa snapped back, raising her hand as if preparing to strike the weeping woman across the face.
But before Vanessa's hand could fall, a massive, terrifyingly dark shadow fell completely over both women.
Vincent Moretti stepped forward from the left side of the room. He was forty-one years old, incredibly tall, with sharp dark hair and a shadow of stubble on his strong jaw. He wore a perfectly tailored, sharp black tuxedo with a black bowtie and a crisp white shirt.
