Chapter 7 - The Horrifying Discovery

Close-up: Tight shot on Eleanor Moretti standing in the background.
The sixty-year-old matriarch, wearing a stunning dark blue sequined evening gown, had been speaking with a group of investors near the string quartet when she heard the shattering glass. She had walked over to investigate the commotion, intending to quiet the disturbance.
But as Eleanor looked past her furious son and her arrogant future daughter-in-law, her eyes completely bypassed the shattered crystal and the spilled champagne.
Her gaze locked entirely, exclusively onto the exposed skin of the maid's right shoulder, where Vanessa had violently torn the uniform fabric away.
Eleanor’s breath caught violently in her throat. All the blood completely drained from her face, leaving her looking paler than a ghost. Her trembling hands flew up to cover her mouth in absolute, paralyzing horror.
There, etched deeply into the pale skin of the maid's exposed shoulder, was a massive, incredibly distinct, crescent-shaped burn scar.
It wasn't just a random injury. It was the exact, undeniable, and permanent physical mark left behind by a molten piece of falling metal—the very last injury Eleanor had watched her teenage daughter sustain before the collapsing ceiling of the burning Chicago apartment had separated them forever twenty years ago.
"No..." Eleanor whispered, her voice completely breathless, shaking with the profound, agonizing weight of two decades of unresolved grief and sudden, impossible hope.

Her knees buckled slightly, but she refused to fall. She couldn't tear her eyes away from the scar. The ghost she had mourned every single day of her life was kneeling on the polished marble floor of her own ballroom.
