Chapter 3 - The Linen Napkin

Claire’s heart was hammering against her ribs, but her realistic facial micro-expressions revealed absolutely nothing.
For three years, she had endured Garrett’s subtle manipulations and Vivian’s passive-aggressive insults. She had played the role of the devoted, naive wife perfectly. She had smiled at their galas, hosted their dinners, and allowed Garrett to believe he was the absolute king of their empire.
But the wine dripping down her neck was the final, unforgivable crossing of the line.
With incredibly slow, deliberate cinematic realism, Claire reached out and picked up the folded white linen napkin from her lap. She didn't shake. She didn't look away from Garrett’s furious eyes.
She brought the napkin to her jawline and calmly wiped the dark red wine from her skin. The pristine white fabric instantly stained crimson, mirroring the death of their marriage.
"You're acting like a child, Claire," Vivian scoffed from the side, annoyed by the eerie silence. "Just sign the wire transfer authorization. Garrett has a massive real estate deal closing tomorrow, and your petty refusal is risking our family's entire portfolio. Sign it, apologize, and we can all go home."
Claire lowered the stained napkin to the table. She looked at her mother-in-law, her natural breathing completely steady.

"Your family's portfolio is already dead, Vivian," Claire stated softly.
👉 Garrett’s face flushed with explosive anger, and he was about to make the final, fatal mistake of his entire life.
