Chapter 9 - The Trap Revealed

Claire sat calmly at the table, the red wine still staining her elegant black dress. She looked at her hyperventilating husband with absolute, freezing contempt.

"I hired a forensic accountant three weeks ago, Garrett," Claire explained, her voice steady and merciless. "I know about the shell companies. I know about the massive debts you owe to the offshore syndicates. I know you've been secretly draining my father's corporate accounts for six months."

Garrett’s knees physically buckled. He grabbed the edge of the table to keep from collapsing.

"But I didn't just want you arrested for fraud," Claire continued, picking up the white linen napkin again. "I wanted you locked away for extortion. The FBI needed you to verbally issue a violent threat to extort money across state lines."

She pointed to her smartphone, which was still connected to the active call.

"The agent on the other end of that line just recorded everything," Claire stated smoothly. "You threatening to destroy me. You demanding half a million dollars. And your mother happily admitting she was a co-conspirator."

"No! Claire, please!" Vivian wailed, completely abandoning her cruel, high-society persona as an agent firmly grabbed her arms. "I'm your family! We can fix this! I didn't know how bad his debts were!"
