Chapter 13 - the lesson on power

The night rain fell lightly outside the window of the tiny, dilapidated apartment where Damon and his son lived. Evan sat quietly on the single bed, his eyes still shining with absolute admiration and awe.
The thirteen-year-old boy always thought his father was just a poor, enduring laborer who was constantly pushed around. He never imagined that his exhausted father could defeat a champion.
"Dad," Evan hesitantly spoke, breaking the silent atmosphere. "The scars on your body... You used to be a real warrior, right? Why did you hide it from me all this time?"
Damon paused from wiping the kitchen counter. He walked over, sitting next to his son with a sorrowful gaze. The painful memories of the battlefield he had tried to bury once again surfaced vividly.
"I hid it because violence is not something to be proud of, Evan," Damon said in a deep, warm voice, gently ruffling his son's hair. "Those scars are the price paid for taking the lives of others."
He looked deeply into the boy's curious eyes. "That coach has strength, but he uses it to bully the weak. That is cowardice. True power lies in knowing how to control your own ego."

Evan listened in silence, absorbing every word from his father. The boy gradually realized that bravery doesn't lie in throwing flashy punches, but in the ability to protect the vulnerable people around you.
