Chapter 5 - The Reveal

Damon stared at the grinning twenty-nine-year-old champion for exactly one beat.
Then, he calmly bent down. Without an ounce of hesitation or fear, Damon methodically unlatched his heavy, battered leather work boots. He pulled them off his feet and placed them neatly right beside the edge of the blue padded combat mat.
The crowd continued to whisper and snicker, fully expecting the out-of-shape father to embarrass himself.
But as Damon stood back up, he reached down and grabbed the hem of his loose, sweat-stained gray work shirt. In one fluid motion, he pulled the heavy fabric completely over his head and tossed it aside onto his boots.
The mocking laughter around the crowded gym instantly, completely weakened, dying in the throats of the surrounding parents.
Beneath the baggy gray work shirt, Damon possessed an unexpectedly massive, deeply powerful, and hyper-athletic physique carved from years of intense, grueling physical discipline. But it wasn't just his muscular build that silenced the room.
Crisscrossing violently across his broad chest, shoulders, and torso was a network of old, faded, but undeniably severe battle scars—the distinct, specific, and terrifying physical marks of a man who had survived horrific, close-quarters lethal combat.
Damon stepped fully onto the blue combat mat barefoot. He didn't bounce on his toes. He didn't raise his fists into a traditional boxing guard. He simply stood perfectly balanced, his arms relaxed at his sides, exuding a heavy, lethal stillness.
Blake’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but his massive ego quickly recovered. He raised his fists high, adopting his perfect, five-time state champion kickboxing stance.
"Ready, maintenance man?" Blake sneered.

"Whenever you are," Damon replied, his voice completely dead.
