Chapter 19 - starting over

Standing in the middle of the quiet dojo, Miller's words echoed deep within Damon's mind. He thought of Evan, of his son's hopeful eyes when he blurted out questions about strength and bravery on that rainy night.
Damon understood that hiding in the guise of a maintenance worker could not help his son become stronger. The boy needed a true guide, someone to teach him how to face fear without losing himself.
After a moment of silence, Damon looked up at Miller, his eyes glowing with an unwavering flame that had long been extinguished. "I will accept," he replied, his voice deep and strong. "But I want my son to be the first student."
A few days later, Damon officially donned a simple black martial arts uniform, standing on the gray mat. Opposite him was Evan, the thirteen-year-old boy in a crisp white uniform, his eyes no longer holding insecurity and weakness.
"Martial arts are not for hurting others," Damon stated clearly, his gaze sweeping over Evan and a small group of newly joined students. "Martial arts are to train the mind, protect oneself, and shield the weak."
Damon didn't teach flashy spinning kicks meant for show. He started with the most basic lessons on posture, balance, and breathing. He taught them how to stand firm on their own two feet in the face of any storm.
