Chapter 10 - The Father Restored

Mia was standing frozen near the marble counter, clutching the white plate with the half-eaten slice of cake. She was trembling, overwhelmed by the explosive events that had just unfolded.

Damian slowly walked back over to her. He didn't kneel this time; he sat entirely down on the hard stone patio, crossing his legs so he was smaller and completely non-threatening to the terrified child.

He didn't care about the dirt. He didn't care about the elite crowd watching them in absolute, tearful awe.

"She's gone, Mia," Damian whispered softly, his dark eyes filling with heavy, realistic tears. "The bad lady is gone forever. She will never, ever hurt you again."

Mia looked at him, her enormous eyes wide with profound hesitation. "Who are you?"

Damian reached out his large, warm hand, gently touching the platinum crescent moon locket resting on her chest.

"I'm the one who had this made for you," Damian smiled, his voice breaking with overwhelming emotion. "I'm your daddy. And I am so, so sorry it took me so long to find you."

Mia’s lower lip trembled. The wall of fear she had built to survive the last three years completely collapsed. She dropped the plate of cake and threw her tiny, fragile arms around Damian’s neck.

Damian pulled her fiercely into his chest, burying his face in her messy brown hair, violently sobbing as he held his entire universe in his arms once again.

If you were Damian, would you have handed the wicked grandmother over to the police, or was locking her in the basement the only true justice?
