Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Dirt

As the little girl eagerly devoured the cake, the oversized, tattered grey cardigan slipped slightly off her fragile shoulder.

Damian remained kneeling, his dark eyes filled with a strange, inexplicable warmth. Three years ago, he had lost his entire world. His beautiful wife and his two-year-old daughter had supposedly perished in a horrific, devastating house fire at their summer estate. Since that day, Damian had turned his heart into absolute ice, transforming into the ruthless syndicate boss the city feared.

Eleanor, his late wife's mother, had claimed the insurance money and the massive family trust, hosting glamorous parties like this one while Damian drowned in his grief.

Damian reached out, pulling a clean white silk handkerchief from his tuxedo pocket. He gently reached forward to wipe a smear of white frosting from the little girl's dirty cheek.

But as his hand approached her face, the slipping cardigan revealed something resting against her collarbone.

Hanging from a cheap, dirty piece of twine around the child's neck was a heavy, custom-made platinum locket. It was uniquely shaped like a crescent moon, deeply engraved with a pattern of climbing ivy.

Damian’s hand stopped entirely in mid-air. His breathing completely ceased.

The air in his lungs turned to absolute ice. The cinematic realism of the moment was profound—the ambient music of the party, the chatter of the guests, the rustling of the trees all faded into absolute, deafening silence.

There was only one locket in the entire world with that exact design. He had paid a master jeweler in Italy to forge it by hand for his daughter’s first birthday.
