Chapter 8 - The Audio Reveal

Arthur didn't wait for permission. He tapped the screen of the tablet.
Through the crisp audio of the tablet’s speakers, a recording played loudly enough for the front row of elite guests to hear perfectly.
“Hold her hand steady, Richard. Just press her thumb to the scanner.” It was Samantha’s voice, clear as day, dripping with malicious excitement.
“I’ve got it. The patents are transferring to our holding company now. Wire the remaining three million to the offshore account so it looks like she embezzled it and fled.” Richard’s voice echoed back, entirely undeniably his.
The audio clicked off.
The silence that followed was heavy, lethal, and absolutely suffocating.
Samantha’s face turned the color of ash. She covered her mouth with both hands, stumbling backward in her red sparkly dress until she hit a marble pillar. The illusion was dead. The high society she had worshipped was staring at her with pure, unadulterated disgust.
Richard began to hyperventilate. He looked wildly around the room, realizing all the exits were currently being blocked by men in federal windbreakers entering the ballroom.
