Chapter 8 - The Maid's Courage

Marcus stood up slowly. The deadly silence surrounding him was heavier than lead. He turned his head, his dark, calculating eyes locking onto Vivian.

"How did she get that bruise, Vivian?" Marcus asked, his voice entirely devoid of human emotion.

Vivian stumbled backward, her diamond earrings shaking frantically. "She fell! Marcus, I swear, she tripped over the carpet in the hallway and hit her face on the wall! The stress of the fall must have triggered the stroke!"

It was a desperate, pathetic lie. But before Vivian could fully commit to the narrative, a shaky, tear-filled voice interrupted her.

"She didn't fall."

Sophie, the maid in the black and white uniform, stood up from the marble floor. Her white apron was stained with tears and makeup, but her posture was suddenly straight. The quiet, submissive servant had completely disappeared. She glared at Vivian with fierce, unwavering disgust.

"You little liar, shut your mouth!" Vivian shrieked, entirely losing her mind. She lunged forward to strike the maid, but Marcus’s massive, tattooed hand shot out, grabbing Vivian by the throat and violently pinning her against the marble pillar.

"Speak, Sophie," Marcus commanded, not looking away from his hyperventilating fiancée.
