Chapter 9 - The Digital Confession

Vivian gagged against Marcus's iron grip. "She's lying! She just hates me because I yelled at her earlier! It's her word against mine!"
Sophie didn't argue. She simply walked over to the elegant gold chair and picked up her smartphone. She tapped the screen twice and held the volume up to maximum.
She had been recording the catering setup in the hallway when the altercation happened.
The audio played crystal clear through the silent ballroom.
“Excuse me, dear,” the gentle, frail voice of Marcus’s mother echoed from the phone. “There is no need to speak to the staff that way. They are working very hard.”
“Do you know who I am, you withered old hag?” Vivian’s venomous, arrogant voice spat back through the speakers. “I am the future queen of this empire. You are nothing!”
Then, the unmistakable, explosive CRACK of a violent slap echoed from the recording, followed immediately by the heavy thud of the elderly woman collapsing to the floor as the stroke was violently triggered by the trauma.
The recording ended.
Marcus slowly released his grip on Vivian’s throat. She crumpled to the marble floor, coughing and sobbing uncontrollably, her beautiful red silk gown pooling around her like spilled blood. The illusion was completely dead. The entire syndicate now knew she had assaulted their beloved matriarch and tried to let her die to cover her tracks.
