Chapter 1 - The Ambush in the Hallway

The grand hallway of the luxurious mansion was supposed to be completely secure. The highly reflective marble floors gleamed under the warm, golden light of the crystal chandeliers. Classical architecture and expensive art lined the walls, presenting an illusion of impenetrable wealth.

But Cassian knew better.

Cassian, the fearsome, thirty-eight-year-old boss of the city's most powerful mafia syndicate, was walking down the hall. He wore a crisp black button-down shirt and black trousers, the dark ink of a distinctive bird tattoo visible on his neck, with more tattoos creeping down his forearms. He had just survived a massive, violent betrayal by his top lieutenants. He was alone, bleeding slightly from a graze on his shoulder, his gun drawn.

Suddenly, a heavy, suppressed gunshot shattered a priceless vase right next to his head.

Cassian dove behind a massive marble pillar, his heart hammering. An assassin was at the end of the hall, advancing slowly, perfectly silhouetted against the warm lighting.

Cassian checked his weapon. He had exactly one bullet left.

As the assassin’s heavy footsteps grew closer, a tiny blur of motion suddenly darted out from beneath a velvet-draped side table.

It was Rosa. She was only three years old, with long wavy brown hair tied back with a bright yellow bow. She wore a frilly yellow dress, tiny white lace socks, and pink shoes. She was the daughter of one of his maids, a child who should have been safely evacuated hours ago.

Before Cassian could react, Rosa scurried right over to him.

Cassian crouched down on one knee on the cold marble floor, absolutely terrified the assassin would see her. But Rosa didn't cry. She reached out and held his large, tattooed hand with her tiny hands, looking at him with a serious, deeply concentrated expression.

She brought one tiny finger up and pressed it against her lips in a universal "shh" motion.

"Stay quiet," Rosa whispered.
