Chapter 3 - The Monster in the Walls

Cassian carried Rosa quietly down the dark, narrow servant’s tunnel. His tactical mind raced, piecing together the terrifying puzzle.

He had owned this mansion for five years, yet he had never known about this secret passage. But a maid knew about it. And a maid had been using it to hide from a "monster."

"Rosa, piccola," Cassian whispered softly, stepping carefully over the dusty floorboards. "Who is the monster? Does he live in this house?"

Rosa nodded against his shoulder, her yellow bow brushing his neck tattoo.

"He's the man with the shiny gold watch," Rosa answered innocently. "He hurts my mommy. He tells her if she talks to you, he will put me in a box in the ground."

Cassian stopped walking.

The man with the shiny gold watch.

There was only one man in the entire syndicate who wore a custom, solid gold Rolex. It was Vincent. Vincent was Cassian’s second-in-command, his most trusted lieutenant, and the man who was supposed to be managing the estate's security protocol today.

The cinematic realization crashed over Cassian with the force of a nuclear bomb.

Vincent hadn't just failed to stop the coup. Vincent was the coup. He was the one who had hired the assassins currently hunting Cassian in the hallways above. And worse, Vincent had been terrorizing and abusing the innocent staff within Cassian's own home, using his proximity to the boss to operate with complete, untouchable impunity.

"Where is your mommy right now, Rosa?" Cassian asked, his voice dropping to a lethal, demonic rumble.

"She’s in the basement," Rosa whimpered, tears finally welling in her eyes. "The monster locked her down there before the loud noises started."
