Chapter 2 - The Impossible Encounter

The sound of shattering crystal echoed sharply, drawing a few nervous glances from the nearby guests.
Xavier didn't even notice the broken glass. He struggled to catch his breath, his chest heaving under his black suit. His mind was violently rejecting the reality standing right in front of him.
Seven years ago, Sophia had been his executive secretary. She was brilliant, fiercely loyal, and the only woman Xavier had ever truly loved. They had shared a secret, passionate romance. But then, Sophia vanished. The police found her abandoned car near the river. A month later, her vicious, abusive ex-fiancé, Richard, claimed she had jumped off a bridge due to severe depression.
Xavier had buried an empty casket. He had mourned her every single day for seven years, turning his grief into a cold, ruthless empire.
And now, she was standing in front of him, holding the hand of a seven-year-old boy.
Xavier slowly, shakily reached out his tattooed hand, completely ignoring Sophia, to take the little boy's hand.
"Xavier Blackwood," he whispered, his deep voice cracking with an overwhelming, agonizing weight.
A tight close-up captured Sophia’s face. She didn't look relieved to see him. She glared at him protectively, pulling Nathan completely behind her gold gown. Her expression was a tense, terrified mix of anger and panic. She looked around the ballroom as if she were searching for an exit.
"We used to work together," Sophia stated coldly, her voice entirely devoid of the love they once shared.
Nathan peeked out from behind his mother's dress. He looked up at Xavier with polite curiosity and a bright, innocent smile.
