Chapter 2 - The Impossible Claim

The heavy silence in the dining room was absolutely suffocating.
Anna stumbled backward, instinctively clutching her white apron as if it could protect her from the lethal glare of the corporate titan sitting at the table.
"Mr. Vincent, I... I apologize," Anna stammered, her voice shaking violently. "He’s just a baby. He doesn't know what he's saying. He just hears the other children at the park saying it."
Vincent didn't blink. He didn't raise his voice. The cinematic realism of his restraint was infinitely more terrifying than a shout. He slowly stood up from the mahogany table, adjusting his gray suit jacket.
"He is exactly twelve months old," Vincent said, walking slowly toward the terrified maid. "And I have employed you for exactly twelve months. My wife, Sarah, died in a tragic car accident while she was pregnant. The doctors performed a miraculous emergency surgery to save my son. I brought him home, and you were hired the very next day."
Anna nodded frantically, tears welling in her eyes. "Yes, sir. I know."
"So," Vincent whispered, stopping just inches away from her. "Why does my son, who has never seen his mother's face, look at a stranger scrubbing my floors and call her 'Mama'?"
"He's just confused!" Anna cried, dropping her gaze to the floor. "I swear it!"
Vincent reached out and violently grabbed Anna's wrist, twisting it upward. He wasn't looking at her face anymore. He was staring directly at a small, crescent-shaped birthmark on the inside of her forearm.
He turned his intense, dark eyes to look at Noah. The baby in the highchair had the exact same, highly distinctive birthmark on his tiny arm.
