Chapter 5 - The Mastermind's Shadow

"She told me you were the one funding the clinic," Anna wept, wrapping her arms around herself. "She said if I ever tried to go to the police, your highly paid corporate lawyers would destroy me. She said you would have me thrown in prison for extortion, or worse, you would have me killed to protect your reputation."
Vincent sat perfectly still. The sheer, evil magnitude of Sarah’s manipulation was breathtaking. She hadn't just stolen a baby; she had used Vincent’s immense wealth and terrifying reputation as a weapon to silence the biological mother.
"So I forged a fake resume," Anna continued, wiping her eyes. "I dyed my hair. I applied for the lowest-level maid position in your estate just so I could be near him. I spent the last twelve months scrubbing your floors and cleaning your toilets just so I could hold my son for five minutes a day while you were at work."
Vincent looked at Anna. She was twenty-two years old, living in absolute terror, sacrificing her entire life and dignity just to watch her child grow up from the shadows.
He looked at Noah. The baby was entirely innocent, completely oblivious to the horrific violence and deception surrounding his birth.
"You thought I was a monster," Vincent said softly.
"Are you?" Anna asked, her voice trembling. "Are you going to call the police and have me arrested for trespassing? Are you going to take my son away from me forever?"
Vincent didn't answer. He slowly stood up from the chair. He walked over to the mahogany table and picked up his encrypted cell phone.
He didn't dial 911.
