Chapter 4 - The Hidden Envelope

The grand ballroom was suffocatingly quiet, save for the soft sound of their footsteps on the polished dance floor.
June slowly pulled away from the embrace. Theodore looked down at her, profound confusion washing over his handsome face as she took a sudden step backward.
"I'm sorry," June whispered, her voice trembling with intense, heavy guilt. "I shouldn't be dancing with you right now. I should have given you this hours ago, but I was terrified of what it would do to you."
Theodore frowned, his corporate instincts suddenly flaring back to life. "What are you talking about?"
June reached into the small, sparkling clutch she had brought with her to the piano bench. Her hands shook violently as she pulled out a heavy, sealed manila envelope. It wasn't addressed to Theodore. It had Cassandra's elegant handwriting scrawled across the front.
"I was setting up the sheet music in the bridal suite this morning," June explained, her voice dropping to a tense whisper. "Cassandra was screaming on the phone. She dropped this envelope on the floor when she ran out. I picked it up to give it back to her... but the seal was broken. I saw what was inside."
Theodore stared at the envelope. His blood instantly ran ice-cold.
