Chapter 2 - The Shattered Glass

The cinematic tension on the golden beach was absolutely paralyzing.
Harper violently flinched, the sheer, agonizing trauma of her past violently crashing down on her. Her hands went completely numb.
The heavy silver serving tray slipped from her fingers. It crashed loudly onto the sand, shattering dozens of expensive crystal champagne glasses.
She didn't scream. She didn't drop to her knees and weep. The absolute, terrifying restraint she showed was infinitely more powerful than a tantrum. She quickly pulled the torn edges of her blue shirt tightly over her chest, desperately trying to hide the horrific, jagged scars crisscrossing her skin.
"Don't touch me," Harper whispered, her voice shaking with profound, silent agony.
Chloe stood triumphantly in her gold gown. For the last ten years, Chloe had spread a vicious rumor back in their hometown that Harper had dropped out of society because she was a pathetic, broke failure who couldn't handle the pressure of college.
Chloe thought she was exposing a loser.
But as Chloe looked around the beach club, expecting the high-society guests to laugh and mock the ruined server, she realized something was horribly wrong.
Nobody was laughing.
