Chapter 3 - The Golden Clasp

Daniel reacted with blinding, surgical speed.

Before Victoria’s manicured fingers could even brush the fabric of Lily’s dress, Daniel’s large, tattooed hand shot out and caught Victoria’s wrist in an iron vise. He violently shoved her reaching hand aside, standing up to his full height to entirely block her from the child.

“NO! DON'T OPEN THAT BAG!” Victoria screamed hysterically, her glamorous face contorted with sheer, unadulterated terror. She thrashed against his grip, completely abandoning her elegant bridal persona.

“Quiet,” Daniel commanded, his voice dropping into a dark, freezing register that instantly paralyzed her.

Daniel turned back to his daughter, keeping his body positioned between them. He gently placed his hand over Lily’s trembling fingers.

“It’s okay, princess,” Daniel whispered softly. “Show Daddy.”

With a soft click, the little girl slowly opened the gold clasp of her floral handbag.

Victoria suddenly froze. She stopped struggling. Her face turned deathly pale, and her eyes widened in absolute, apocalyptic horror, realizing she had completely lost.

Daniel looked down into the small, pink satin interior of the handbag.

His expression instantly violently changed from protective rage to profound, breathless disbelief. His heart completely stopped. The air was sucked out of his lungs.
