Chapter 5 - The Planted Evidence

"Check the brat's bag," Vivian commanded, pointing her razor-sharp red nail at the tiny, faded pink backpack resting on the kitchen counter.
"Leave her out of this!" Nora screamed, fighting desperately against the guards' iron grip. "She's only four years old! She didn't do anything!"
The older guard stepped forward. He unzipped the small pink backpack. He pulled out a coloring book, a box of crayons, and the wooden hairbrush.
And then, his hand froze.
He reached into the bottom of the bag and slowly pulled out a heavy, glittering sapphire and diamond necklace.
The entire kitchen went dead silent.
"I knew it!" Vivian shrieked victoriously, snatching the necklace from the guard's hand. "She used her own child as a mule to smuggle the diamonds out of the house! She is a disgusting, criminal monster!"
Nora’s knees gave out. She collapsed toward the floor, held up only by the guards restraining her arms. "No... no, please! I didn't put that in there! I have no idea how it got there!"
Alex stood perfectly still in the center of the kitchen. The terrifying, ruthless mafia boss stared at the weeping mother and the priceless necklace. In his world, theft was an unforgivable sin, punishable by absolute violence.
"Alex, you have to make an example of her!" Vivian demanded, her voice dripping with pure venom. "Throw her in the syndicate's warehouse! Break her hands! And call child services to drag this little brat off to a state orphanage where she belongs!"
Little Ivy burst into tears, terrified by the screaming woman. She clung to her mother's leg, weeping uncontrollably.
"Please don't hurt my mommy!" Ivy cried.
