Chapter 8 - The Apology

Leo walked slowly over to the table. He completely ignored his expensive black suit as he dropped to both knees right in front of his mother’s chair.

He rested his head on his mother's lap, wrapping his massive, tattooed arms around her frail waist. He wept silently, his broad shoulders shaking with the crushing weight of his own guilt.

"I am so sorry, Mama," Leo choked out, tears staining the fabric of her faded blue dress. "I was so busy running the city. I was so blind. I failed to protect you."

Mrs. Moretti slowly reached down. Her trembling, wrinkled fingers gently stroked her son's dark hair. A soft, forgiving smile finally touched her lips.

"You didn't know, my sweet boy," she whispered. "You are a good son."

Leo stayed on the floor for a long time, letting the warmth of his mother's forgiveness wash over him. Finally, he took a deep breath, wiped his face, and slowly stood up.

He turned to look at Anna.

The young maid immediately took a step backward, terrified. She fully expected to be fired. She had caused a massive scene, ruined a millionaire's dinner party, and brought the police into his home.

"I'll pack my things, Mr. Leo," Anna whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "I'm sorry for the disturbance."

"Where are you going?" Leo asked, his voice steadying, the powerful boss persona returning, but this time laced with profound respect.

"To the servant's quarters, sir," Anna sniffled.
