Chapter 1 - The Senior Night Mistake

The packed American high school gymnasium was a sea of roaring parents, flashing cameras, and bright, unforgiving overhead lighting.
It was Senior Night. The most important evening in a high school athlete’s life. The polished wooden court squeaked beneath the shoes of the varsity players as they lined up to be escorted by their families.
Travis sat high up in the crowded blue bleachers. He was a man in his forties, wearing a maroon polo shirt and grey jeans. Sitting next to him was his wife, Jodi, wearing a mustard yellow blouse and blue jeans. Jodi had a smug, cruel smile resting on her face.
She had specifically ordered Travis to stay in the bleachers. She wanted her seventeen-year-old daughter, Kaylee, to walk out onto that court entirely alone, humiliated in front of the entire town. It was Jodi’s twisted way of punishing the teenager for refusing to hand over her late father’s college trust fund.
Travis had gone along with his wife’s cruelty out of sheer cowardice. He had let Jodi run the house with an iron fist.
But as the heavy gym doors swung open, the smug smile completely vanished from Jodi’s face.
Kaylee didn't walk out alone.
She stepped onto the polished wood wearing her green volleyball jersey, number seventeen, black knee pads, and crisp white sneakers. She looked incredibly proud. And holding onto her arm was Duane.
Duane was Jodi’s seventy-nine-year-old father. He wore a grey jacket, a blue shirt, dark pants, and a black veteran cap, leaning heavily on a wooden cane. His face was entirely stoic and fiercely protective.
Travis’s heart stopped dead in his chest. He stared at the frail old man, and a crushing, agonizing wave of guilt washed over him.
