Chapter 7 - The Forged Signatures

Kaylee let go of Travis’s hand, staring at her grandfather in shock. "My trust fund? Mom said the market crashed and the money was gone."
"The market didn't crash, sweetheart," Duane said gently. He turned his hard, unforgiving eyes back to his daughter. "Your mother forged my signature as the co-signer. She liquidated the entire two-hundred-thousand-dollar account."
The crowd in the bleachers erupted into loud, horrified whispers.
Jodi was hyperventilating. Her mustard yellow blouse heaved as she frantically tried to spin the narrative. "He's lying! It’s the dementia talking! He doesn't even know what year it is!"
"I know exactly what year it is," Duane countered smoothly. "And I also know that you couldn't access the final safety deposit box without a secondary verification. Which is why you needed to sell my house to cover your massive credit card debts."
Jodi lunged forward like a cornered, feral animal, desperately trying to snatch the manila envelope from her father’s hands. "Give me that!"
But Travis caught her by the shoulders, physically restraining her and pushing her backward. "Don't you ever touch him again, Jodi!"
"Travis, you idiot!" Jodi shrieked, completely losing her mind. "If I go down, you go down! You signed the tax returns! You lived in the house! You are an accomplice!"
Travis stood perfectly still. He looked at Kaylee, then back to his furious wife.

"I know," Travis said quietly. "And I'm ready to pay for my mistakes. But you are never going to hurt this family again."
