Chapter 3 - The Coward's Regret

Travis didn't even look at Jodi. He completely ignored his wife's demanding voice.
Without a single word of explanation, Travis pushed past the knees of the confused parents sitting in his row. He hastily descended the blue bleachers, his grey jeans taking two steps at a time. His heart hammered violently against his ribs.
He walked directly onto the polished wooden court, stepping into the glaring brightness of the overhead lights.
The crowd’s cheering began to falter into a confused murmur. The school principal, standing near the microphone, frowned as the unscripted moment unfolded.
Kaylee and Duane were halfway across the gym floor when they saw him.
Kaylee noticed Travis approaching first. Her beautiful, proud smile slowly faded into deep apprehension. She instinctively gripped her grandfather's arm a little tighter, her knuckles turning white. She thought Travis was coming down to cause a scene, to ruin her special night on her mother’s orders.
Travis stopped directly in front of Duane.
The seventy-nine-year-old veteran didn't flinch. Duane straightened his shoulders, tightening his grip on his wooden cane, moving his body slightly to shield his granddaughter. His stoic, weathered face dared the younger man to try something.
But Travis didn't yell. He didn't demand they leave.
Travis looked at Kaylee. The cold, complacent stepdad was completely gone. His face was carved with deep, genuine, and agonizing remorse. Tears welled in his eyes.
