Chapter 8 - The Officer in the Crowd

"You ungrateful little brat!" Jodi screamed, completely ignoring her husband and turning her venomous rage toward her seventeen-year-old daughter. "I put a roof over your head! You owed me that money! You ruined my life!"
Kaylee didn't cry. She stood tall in her green jersey, looking at her mother with pure, unadulterated pity. "No, Mom. You ruined your own."
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed across the polished wooden court.
Stepping out from the shadows of the bleachers was Officer Miller, a local police officer who was attending the game off-duty in his uniform to watch his own daughter play. But Officer Miller wasn't just a cop; he was a fellow military veteran who had served in the same local legion as Duane.
He had heard every single word.
"Is there a problem here, Duane?" Officer Miller asked, his hand resting casually on his duty belt as he glared at Jodi.
"No problem, Officer," Duane replied, holding out the thick manila envelope. "But I’d like to formally file a report for grand larceny, medical fraud, and elder abuse. The bank records, the forged signatures, and the sworn affidavit from the facility nurse who helped me escape tonight are all inside this envelope."
Jodi’s face went completely slack. The arrogant, controlling monster was entirely shattered.
"Officer, please, it's a misunderstanding!" Jodi begged, taking a step backward as the cop opened the envelope and scanned the top document.

"Turn around, ma'am," Officer Miller commanded, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
