Chapter 6 - The Veteran's Secret

"I'm not leaving with you, Jodi," Duane said.
The old man’s voice wasn't weak or confused. It was strong, clear, and carried the undeniable authority of a man who had survived a war.
Jodi’s face turned the color of chalk. She looked at her father, realizing that the heavy sedatives the corrupt facility doctor was supposed to be administering had completely worn off.
"Dad, you're sick," Jodi panicked, raising her voice for the crowd to hear. "You are having a psychotic episode! Is there a doctor in the gym?!"
Duane didn't flinch. He leaned calmly on his wooden cane and reached his free hand into the inside breast pocket of his grey jacket.
"I was never sick," Duane announced, pulling out a thick, heavy manila envelope. "The only thing wrong with my mind was trusting my own daughter with my medical power of attorney."
Jodi stared at the envelope. Her eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing terror.
She knew exactly what was inside that package.
When Jodi had locked her father away, she had immediately gone to his house to clear out his safe. But the safe had been entirely empty. She had assumed Duane had simply misplaced his documents in his "dementia."
She was wrong.
"What is that?" Travis asked, looking down at the envelope.

"It's the reason she locked me away," Duane replied stoically. "Before she drugged my tea and dragged me to that hellhole, I had my lawyer pull the financial records on my granddaughter's trust fund."
