Chapter 2 - The Stolen Dignity

Travis couldn't breathe. The air in the hot, packed gymnasium seemed to evaporate.

Just three weeks ago, Jodi had forced Duane out of his own home. She had claimed he was suffering from severe dementia, convincing a corrupt doctor to sign off on committing the seventy-nine-year-old veteran to a rundown, state-run facility fifty miles away.

Travis had stood by and watched as Jodi threw her own father’s belongings into garbage bags. He had listened to Jodi laugh on the phone with her real estate agent, plotting to sell Duane’s paid-off house and steal the profits to fund her lavish lifestyle.

Travis had justified his silence by telling himself it wasn't his business. But looking at Duane now—standing tall, dignified, and perfectly lucid next to his granddaughter—Travis realized he hadn't just been a silent bystander. He had been an accomplice to a monster.

"Number seventeen, Kaylee Brandt!" the announcer’s voice boomed cheerfully over the gymnasium’s PA system.

The crowd erupted into massive applause. Kaylee smiled proudly, walking arm-in-arm with Duane. Despite his heavy limp and reliance on his wooden cane, Duane held his head high, escorting the granddaughter who loved him more than anything in the world.

Travis felt physically sick to his stomach. He had raised Kaylee since she was a little girl. He had taught her how to serve a volleyball. And tonight, he had abandoned her just to appease a toxic, greedy wife.

Travis abruptly stood up from the blue bleachers.

Jodi snapped her head toward him, her fake, dramatic emotional facade dropping instantly.
