Chapter 4 - The Loyal Maid

Sophia was only twenty-three years old, but she possessed a deeply empathetic heart, an incredibly sharp, observant mind, and a profound sense of moral justice.
She had been hired as a basic domestic servant, specifically instructed by the arrogant Madam to clean the upstairs suites, feed the old woman, administer her daily pills, and absolutely never, under any circumstances, speak to her. Valeria had warned Sophia that the old woman was a highly volatile "vegetable" and that interacting with her was a waste of time.
But as Sophia spent hours quietly sitting beside the wheelchair in the dark bedroom, she began to notice very subtle, highly unusual things.
Mrs. Moretti wasn't brain-dead. Her bright, intelligent eyes tracked Sophia's movements across the room. When Valeria entered the suite to yell cruel insults at her, the old woman’s jaw would clench slightly, revealing a deep, suppressed fury entirely inconsistent with a vegetative coma.
Sophia’s suspicions peaked when she began researching the specific, heavy pills Valeria had ordered her to crush into the old woman's food. They weren't standard stroke recovery medications. They were incredibly powerful, highly restricted chemical tranquilizers designed to induce artificial paralysis and suppress the central nervous system.
Realizing the horrific truth, Sophia made a massive, incredibly dangerous decision that risked her entire life in the mafia household.
For the past two weeks, Sophia had secretly, methodically stopped giving Mrs. Moretti the toxic sedatives. She crushed up harmless vitamin pills instead, flushing the heavy tranquilizers down the toilet. Slowly, day by agonizing day, the heavy chemical fog began to completely lift from the matriarch's brain. Her eyes grew sharper, her breathing grew stronger, and the fierce, unbroken spirit of the mafia queen began to completely reawaken in the shadows.
Tonight, Mrs. Moretti had squeezed Sophia’s hand with surprising strength and communicated her absolute, desperate demand using a series of blinks and faint whispers.
