Chapter 1 - The Shattered Unicorn

The light blue walls of the child’s bedroom were supposed to be a sanctuary, but right now, they felt like the scene of a ruthless crime. The floor was completely covered in jagged, sharp pieces of painted white ceramic. What used to be a beautiful, hand-painted unicorn piggy bank was now completely obliterated, reduced to dust and scattered silver coins across the plush carpet.
Kneeling right in the center of the wreckage was eight-year-old Ava. The little girl in the light pink short-sleeve dress was sobbing hysterically, her tiny hands hovering over the broken pieces of her favorite possession, too afraid to touch the sharp edges.
Kneeling right beside her was her mother, Sarah.
Sarah wore a dark navy blue sweater, her short brown hair falling forward as she stared at the shattered ceramic. Her realistic facial micro-expressions shifted rapidly from profound confusion to a deep, burning anger. She looked up from the floor, her eyes locking onto the woman standing casually in the doorway.
It was Brenda, Sarah’s sister-in-law.

Brenda stood tall, completely unbothered, wearing a shiny rust-orange silk blouse and tailored black pants. Dangling from her wrists were several high-end, colorful designer gift bags.
"You took money from a child's room?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of absolute disbelief and rising fury. She couldn't comprehend the sheer audacity of what she was looking at.
