Chapter 7 - The Family Gathering

Downstairs in the luxurious living room, the atmosphere was sickeningly cheerful.
A fire crackled in the marble fireplace. Brenda was sitting on the plush leather sofa, her shiny rust-orange silk blouse glowing in the warm light. She was eagerly pulling expensive, designer cashmere sweaters and luxury watches out of the colorful gift bags, showing them off to her parents.
"Look at this stitching!" Brenda gloated, holding up a ridiculously expensive child's jacket. "My boys are going to look absolutely perfect for the family holiday photos."
The grandfather chuckled, sipping a glass of bourbon. "They certainly are. You always have such wonderful taste, Brenda."
Sarah walked silently down the grand staircase, her hands tucked neatly into the pockets of her dark navy blue sweater. She stood at the edge of the living room, watching the toxic family celebrate with money stolen from a grieving eight-year-old child.
"Oh, look who decided to join us," Brenda sneered, noticing Sarah standing in the doorway. She rolled her eyes and gestured to an empty armchair. "Are you done pouting? Come sit down. I'll write Ava a check for fifty bucks tomorrow if it'll stop your whining."
Sarah didn't sit down. She didn't say a word. She just offered Brenda a slow, icy, completely unreadable smile.

Brenda frowned, slightly unnerved by the chilling silence. "What? Why are you looking at me like that?"
👉 Before Sarah could answer, the sudden, terrifying sound of heavy fists pounding on the front door shattered the room.
