Chapter 4 - The Closed Door

Sarah slowly stood up from the floor. She gave her daughter one last reassuring squeeze before turning her back on the shattered ceramic unicorn.

She walked toward the doorway, her cinematic, natural breathing completely steady. She didn't look at the grandfather in his blue shirt. She didn't look at the grandmother. And she entirely ignored the smug, victorious smirk plastered across Brenda’s face.

Without uttering a single word, Sarah stepped out into the hallway. She grabbed the brass handle of the white bedroom door and pulled it shut.

CLICK.

The sound of the heavy door firmly closing echoed loudly in the corridor, physically separating her daughter from the toxic monsters of the family.

Brenda let out a short, triumphant laugh. "See? I told you she'd get over it," Brenda boasted to her parents, proudly lifting her colorful gift bags. "She always makes a mountain out of a molehill. Come on, let me show you the cashmere sweaters I bought the boys with that spare change."

The three of them walked down the grand staircase, chatting happily, entirely convinced that they had won the battle. They believed Sarah was just a submissive, weak woman who would never dare to cross the in-laws.

But Sarah hadn't gone downstairs to accept defeat.
