Chapter 8 - The Flashing Lights

The heavy, aggressive knocking echoed through the entire mansion.
Simultaneously, the large front windows of the living room were suddenly illuminated by violently flashing red and blue lights, painting the walls in the unmistakable colors of law enforcement.
The cheerful atmosphere in the room completely evaporated.
The grandfather spilled his bourbon, his white hair seeming to stand on end as he looked toward the window in sheer panic. "What on earth? Are the police here?"
Brenda’s arrogant smirk instantly vanished. The color began to drain from her cheeks as she clutched the cashmere sweater to her chest. "Sarah... what did you do?"
Sarah calmly walked across the hardwood floor and pulled the heavy mahogany front doors open.
Standing on the porch were two massive, heavily armed police officers. Their expressions were stone-cold and strictly professional. They stepped into the grand foyer, their eyes immediately scanning the room until they locked onto the woman in the rust-orange blouse.
"We received a call regarding a felony grand larceny," the lead officer stated, his deep voice carrying unquestionable authority. He placed his hand near his utility belt. "We are looking for a Brenda Hayes. Is she on the premises?"
