Chapter 10 - The Price of Greed

"No! Wait!" Brenda sobbed hysterically, backing away until she hit the edge of the sofa. "I didn't know! I swear I didn't know it was in there! I'll give it back!"
She frantically dug into her designer handbag, pulling out the small black velvet pouch and tossing it onto the coffee table like it was on fire.
"Returning stolen property after you're caught doesn't erase the crime, ma'am," the officer stated coldly. He lunged forward, grabbing Brenda by the arms and forcefully twisting them behind her back. The heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut over the cuffs of her shiny rust-orange silk blouse with terrifying finality.
"Mom! Dad! Do something!" Brenda screamed, crying genuine tears of absolute terror as the officers began dragging her toward the door.
The grandparents stood completely paralyzed, weeping in shock, entirely powerless to stop the federal consequences of their daughter's unchecked greed.

Sarah stood perfectly still, her face a mask of elegant satisfaction. She picked up the black velvet pouch from the table, safely securing her daughter's future once again. As the officers dragged Brenda out into the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruiser, Sarah walked back upstairs. She opened the white bedroom door, pulling her daughter into a safe, deeply loving hug, knowing the toxic monsters would never be allowed in their home again.
If you were Sarah, would you have warned Brenda about the hidden camera, or was letting her get arrested the only way she would ever learn her lesson?
