Chapter 1 - The Broken Fever

The sprawling master bedroom of the Moretti estate was bathed in the dim, golden glow of a single bedside lamp. The air was heavy with the smell of clinical antiseptics and raw, suffocating exhaustion.
Claire Moretti sat perfectly upright in the center of the rumpled king-sized bed. She was thirty-four, her long brunette hair falling loosely in tangled waves over her shoulders. She wore a soft, delicate white lace nightgown, but there was nothing fragile about the look in her eyes. Her beautiful, tear-streaked face was carved from absolute stone, fueled by a fierce, maternal rage.
Held tightly against her chest was her six-year-old daughter, Emma. The little girl looked heartbreakingly fragile in her pale floral pajamas. Her rosy cheeks burned with the remnants of a 102-degree fever, and a small, stark white medical bandage was taped securely across her forehead. Emma clutched a worn, beige stuffed rabbit tightly to her chest, her breathing shallow and weak.
The heavy mahogany door creaked open.
Vincent Moretti stepped into the room. At forty years old, he was Chicago’s most feared mafia boss. He was heavily muscular and movie-star handsome, with thick, dark wavy hair and trimmed stubble. Visible black tattoos crawled up his neck, across his upper chest, and down to his forearms, barely contained by his fitted, open-collar black shirt and tailored black trousers.
He had walked into the house annoyed, accustomed to controlling every room he entered. But the moment his piercing blue-gray eyes landed on the bed, his irritation violently shifted into profound confusion.
He looked at his wife. He expected her to yell. Instead, Claire stared at him with an icy, devastating emptiness. One arm was wrapped securely around Emma, while her other hand rested protectively over the child’s bandaged forehead.

“Go back to Sophia,” Claire said. Her voice was quiet, deeply wounded, and completely absolute.
