Chapter 8 - The Price of Betrayal

"Explain it," Vincent commanded, stepping around the desk. His massive, muscular frame completely blocked her only exit. "Explain to me why you decided my daughter's life was an acceptable price to pay to play your pathetic little games."
Sophia began sobbing hysterically, her designer makeup running down her face in dark streaks.
"I did it because I love you!" Sophia shrieked, cornered and desperate. "She uses that brat to keep you chained to her! I wanted you to see that you don't need them! You belong with me, Vincent! We were supposed to rule this city together!"
Vincent looked at her with pure, unfiltered disgust. He suddenly realized the magnitude of his own stupidity. He had traded a loyal, beautiful, fiercely protective wife and an innocent, loving child for a manipulative, venomous parasite.
"You don't know the first thing about loyalty," Vincent whispered.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He didn't call the police. He called the number that terrified the entire criminal underworld of Chicago.
"Marcus," Vincent said calmly into the phone. "Bring the team to the study."
Sophia fell to her knees on the expensive rug, clasping her hands together in a desperate prayer. "Vincent, no! Please! I'm sorry! Don't kill me! I'll leave the city! I swear you'll never see me again!"
"I'm not going to kill you, Sophia," Vincent said coldly, looking down at her pathetic form. "Death is entirely too easy for what you did to my family."
