Chapter 4 - The Departure

Vincent stared at the text message, completely paralyzed. The world seemed to stop spinning. The woman he had been sleeping with, the woman he had allowed to distract him from his own blood, had intercepted his wife’s desperate pleas for help and actively endangered his child.
"No..." Vincent breathed, his hands trembling as he backed away from the screen. "Claire, I swear on my life, I didn't write that. I was in the shower. I didn't see the phone."
Claire didn't care. She was completely past the point of listening to his excuses.
Vincent reached frantically toward the packed bag on the floor, trying to pull it away, and then reached for Emma. But Claire instantly raised one hand, stopping him dead in his tracks before his fingers could even graze his daughter's pale floral pajamas.
"Don't touch her," Claire commanded softly, but with absolute, unbreakable authority.
Vincent remained kneeling on the expensive Persian rug, completely stunned, stripped of all his power and intimidation. He was reduced to nothing but a broken man watching his entire universe collapse.
Claire gracefully shifted Emma securely into her arms. The little girl clutched her beige stuffed rabbit, resting her bandaged head heavily against her mother’s shoulder. Claire grabbed the handles of her overnight bag and stood up.
She looked down at her husband. Her face was cold, determined, and fiercely protective. Her eyes never left Vincent.
“By sunrise, Emma and I will be gone,” Claire said, her voice soft but absolute.
She walked past him, stepping over the ringing phone on the floor. Vincent couldn't even stand up to stop her. He listened to her footsteps echo down the grand hallway, the heavy front door shutting with a sound that felt exactly like a coffin closing.
