Chapter 7 - The Security Footage

Sophia’s face turned the color of wet chalk. Her confident, glamorous posture completely collapsed.

"She... she must have spoofed your number!" Sophia stammered frantically, standing up from the edge of the desk. "Or maybe you got hacked! You have enemies, Vincent! This is a setup!"

Vincent didn't yell. He didn't raise his voice. He simply opened the top drawer of his desk and pulled out a sleek, black iPad. He tapped the screen once and turned it around, sliding it across the polished mahogany toward her.

"I pay the rent for your luxury penthouse, Sophia," Vincent said, his voice as cold as a morgue. "Did you really think Chicago's most paranoid mafia boss wouldn't install hidden security cameras in a property registered under his own syndicate?"

Sophia stopped breathing. She stared in absolute, unadulterated horror at the high-definition video playing on the screen.

It was footage from her own bedroom at exactly 2:12 AM. The video clearly showed Vincent stepping into the master bathroom and turning on the shower. It showed the glowing screen of his cell phone lighting up on the nightstand.

And it showed Sophia.

The footage captured her picking up his phone, reading the frantic, desperate notifications from Claire. It showed a vicious, cruel smile spreading across her face. It showed her typing the horrific text message, hitting send, and then methodically deleting the call logs and the message thread before tossing the phone back onto the table.

"You read that my six-year-old daughter was bleeding and seizing," Vincent growled, rising slowly from his chair like a towering, lethal shadow. "And you smiled."
