Chapter 2 - The Ring on the Nightstand

Vincent froze in the doorway. The cold, commanding authority that made men tremble across Chicago completely vanished from his face.

He stepped slowly inside the bedroom, his highly polished black shoes sinking into the expensive Persian rug. He instinctively reached his heavily tattooed hand toward Emma, wanting to touch her cheek, but Claire immediately pulled their daughter closer, shielding the child from him.

That was when Vincent finally saw it.

Wrapped tightly around Emma’s tiny, pale wrist was a bright yellow hospital admission bracelet. His eyes darted to the mahogany nightstand, which was cluttered with orange prescription bottles, a digital thermometer, and a glass of half-empty water.

Emma stirred weakly against her mother’s chest. Her tired, feverish blue eyes fluttered open. She looked directly at Vincent, but she didn't smile. She just buried her face deeper into Claire’s white lace nightgown.

Vincent dropped to a crouch beside the mattress. His heavily tattooed hand gripped the edge of the bedframe until his knuckles turned white. His face was visibly shaken, his mind struggling to process the horrifying reality of what he had missed.

“I didn’t know it was that serious,” Vincent whispered, his deep voice low, desperate, and defensive.

Before Claire could even answer, a sharp, upbeat ringtone shattered the silence. It was coming from Vincent’s trouser pocket. He pulled his phone out, looked at the caller ID, and froze. It was Sophia. His glamorous first love. The woman he had just spent the last six hours with.

Claire saw his hesitation. It was the ultimate, final insult.

Without breaking eye contact, Claire slowly reached to her left hand. She slid her custom, three-carat diamond wedding ring off her finger. With a soft, metallic click, she placed it directly beside the plastic medicine bottles on the nightstand.

Then, she reached down and pulled a large, fully packed overnight bag from the shadows beside the bed.
