Chapter 6 - The Interrogation

Vincent slowly reached out and picked up the diamond ring from the desk, rolling it between his heavily tattooed fingers.

"My daughter was in the hospital last night," Vincent stated smoothly, his tone utterly devoid of emotion.

Sophia’s hands froze on his shoulders for a fraction of a second. She quickly recovered, walking around the desk to sit on the edge of the mahogany wood, crossing her long legs and feigning a look of deep sympathy.

"Oh, my god. Is she okay?" Sophia asked, placing a hand over her heart. "That poor thing. Claire really should take better care of her. I always said she was a neglectful mother."

Vincent’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. "She had a 104-degree fever. She seized and split her head open on the bathroom tiles."

"That's terrible, Vincent," Sophia sighed, leaning forward to touch his arm. "But you can't blame yourself. You didn't know."

"I didn't," Vincent agreed softly. He finally lifted his piercing blue-gray eyes to look directly into her face. "Claire said she called my secure line twenty-seven times. The line that was sitting on the nightstand next to your bed."

Sophia’s realistic micro-expressions betrayed a sudden spike of sheer panic, but she forced a dismissive laugh. "Vincent, you know Claire. She's hysterical. She's just making up numbers to make you feel guilty for being with me. Your phone never rang."

Vincent leaned back in his leather chair. He tilted his head slightly, studying the woman he had foolishly allowed back into his life. He watched the subtle twitch in her left eye. The way her breathing had suddenly become incredibly shallow.

"She also said I sent her a text message at 2:14 AM," Vincent continued, his voice dropping an octave. "Telling her to stop using my kid for attention."
