Chapter 10 - The New Empire

Cassandra finally smiled. The heavy, suffocating terror of the last four years completely lifted from her shoulders.

Tears spilled down her cheeks as she knelt beside them on the tarmac, wrapping her arms around Damon's broad shoulders. Little Violet, still holding her gray stuffed elephant, stepped forward and hugged his neck, completely safe and entirely fearless in her father's massive arms.

The broken family was finally, permanently whole.

A month later, the dangerous branches of the syndicate were completely dismantled. Damon kept his vow. He stepped down from the violent underworld, transferring his power to legitimate, corporate holdings. He used his massive wealth to build an untouchable, incredibly safe empire for his family.

They moved into a sprawling, beautiful estate in the countryside, far away from the dark alleys of Chicago.

Damon never yelled. He never wore his terrifying mafia scowl in the house. He spent his days pushing Luke on the swings and teaching Violet how to paint, completely devoted to the woman who had bravely protected his bloodline.

Silas was permanently erased by the Russian cartel, his name nothing but a cautionary tale for anyone who dared to betray their own family.

As Damon watched his children run across the green lawn in the bright sunlight, holding Cassandra’s hand tightly in his own, he knew that the greatest victory of his life wasn't conquering a city—it was finding the ghosts he lost in the sky.

If you were Cassandra, would you have ever trusted the reformed mafia boss again, or would you have demanded he let you leave the country forever?
