Chapter 3 - The Secret Assassin

The severe turbulence finally began to settle, but the storm inside the cabin had just begun.

"Please, Damon," Cassandra choked out, tears finally spilling down her pale cheeks. "Just let us go. I didn't want this life for them. I couldn't let them grow up surrounded by guns and death."

"I would have protected them!" Damon growled softly, the betrayal searing through his veins. "I would have protected you! I loved you!"

"You couldn't even protect yourself!" Cassandra cried back, her maternal instincts overriding her fear.

Damon frowned, lethal confusion breaking through his intense grief. "What are you talking about?"

Cassandra swallowed hard, looking nervously around the cabin to ensure no one was listening. "Four years ago, on the night of your birthday gala, I went into your private study to leave your gift. Your brother, Silas, was already in there."

Damon’s jaw locked. Silas was his trusted underboss.

"Silas didn't see me," Cassandra whispered, trembling violently at the memory. "He was on the phone with the Russian cartel. I heard him authorize the hit on you. He gave them your exact security routes. He was going to have you assassinated so he could take over the syndicate."

The cinematic realism of Damon’s profound shock was breathtaking.

"If I had told you," Cassandra sobbed, "Silas would have known I heard him. He would have slaughtered me and the babies to protect his secret. I couldn't risk it. I had to run."
