Chapter 9 - The Broken King

Damon didn't loom over Cassandra. He didn't demand obedience.

The towering, feared mafia boss walked over and immediately dropped to his knees right on the cold concrete tarmac. He didn't care about his expensive suit. He looked up at the woman he loved, then looked at the two beautiful children staring back at him.

"You don't have to run anymore, Cassandra," Damon whispered, tears of pure, overwhelming emotion finally spilling from his dark eyes. "The monster is gone. The empire is completely secure."

Cassandra stared at him, her heart hammering violently. "You aren't going to take them from me?"

"I would never take them from you," Damon choked out, his voice cracking with raw agony. "I just want to be with you. All of you. I swear on my life, I will burn the rest of the violent world to ashes before I ever let anyone hurt this family again."

Little Luke let go of his mother's hand. He stepped forward fearlessly, his glittery sneakers pattering against the concrete.

He reached out and gently touched the tears on Damon's scarred face.

"Are you still an angry man?" Luke asked innocently, tilting his head.
